Rafael Machiaverni: Improving Educational Attainment for Millions of Brazilian Students

Rafael: Glad to be with you, Spiffy! At Parceiros da Educação, our main goal is to increase the learning levels within the public educational system of the State of São Paulo to the highest in Latin America by 2040. Our challenges include the current learning levels—which are low in Brazil as a whole: only 10% of Brazilian students leave K-12 schools with adequate proficiency in math, for example—and the size of the São Paulo network, which has more than 5.6 million students.

Oliver Godliving Lukuba: Making Period Care Accessible in Schools Everywhere

Oliver Godliving Lukuba: Making Period Care Accessible in Schools Everywhere
Oliver: Glad to be with you, Spiffy! I’m addressing the challenge of a lack of sanitary products for girls and the presence of period stigma in schools. I attended a school where a menstruating girl would have to go back home and stay there until her menses were done due to fear of frequently facing the chronic issues of period stigma and poverty. I’m solving it by making a pads vending machine and providing it to schools to enable girls who are victims of period poverty to access pads at a very affordable price. I also conducted seminars to ensure that we educate boys and everyone else on period stigma and period stereotypes.

Shelley Pasnik: Supporting the Life Trajectories of Children around the World

Shelley Pasnik: Supporting the Life Trajectories of Children around the World
Shelley: Wonderful to have time with you, Spiffy! There is growing interest in investing in the early years—and for good reason. Children with high-quality early experiences do better in school, earn more income over their lifetimes, and enjoy better health. Furthermore, their parents are more secure in employment, and their families are more stable. That’s why for decades my colleagues and I have developed and implemented programs that meet children’s needs and support the grown-ups in their lives. Two of our signature programs are Start Right Now, which uses interactive audio instruction to link health, education, and workforce development, and First 10.
