Rafael Machiaverni: Improving Educational Attainment for Millions of Brazilian Students

Rafael: Glad to be with you, Spiffy! At Parceiros da Educação, our main goal is to increase the learning levels within the public educational system of the State of São Paulo to the highest in Latin America by 2040. Our challenges include the current learning levels—which are low in Brazil as a whole: only 10% of Brazilian students leave K-12 schools with adequate proficiency in math, for example—and the size of the São Paulo network, which has more than 5.6 million students.

Alikhan Madibekov: Supporting Inclusive and Equitable Access to Sex Education

Alikhan: The pleasure is mine, Spiffy! Teenagers worldwide don't have much access to sexual education—schools hardly organize enough sessions to teach them, and educators lack engaging tools, which makes the lesson often awkward and dull. In Central Asia (and not only), people also can't talk about the stigmatized topic (“Shh, sex!”) openly, and that doesn't seem right. It increases the chances of getting STDs, STIs, and getting rights violated.

Emily Miller: Spicing Up and Connecting the World with Afghan Culture

Emily: Glad to be with you, Spiffy! For longer than many of us can remember, Afghanistan and the rest of the Middle East has been considered a war-torn region. Afghanistan has been in conflict for decades. We founded Rumi Spice to use spices to counteract that story. We direct source the highest quality spices from rural farmers and women in Afghanistan to help provide reliable wages and economic stability. We are on a mission to create connections to the vibrant culture of the Middle East, its delicious food, and its people.
