Gregory Rockson: Disrupting the Healthcare Ecosystem in Africa through Innovation

Gregory: Glad to be with you, Spiffy! Our vision is an Africa that is in good health. mPharma is a patient-centered, technology-driven healthcare company that is disrupting the healthcare ecosystem in Africa by addressing the fragmented drug supply chain and its resulting impact on accessibility and affordability of drugs and healthcare services in Africa. As a healthcare provider, we provide innovative solutions, including vendor-managed inventory services for hospitals and pharmacies, a pharmacy-in-a-box franchise solution for community pharmacies known as “QualityRx,” aimed at scaling primary care solutions for community pharmacies, and a “heal-now-pay-later” financing solution for patients who pay for their drugs out-of-pocket—all of which mPharma pioneered in Africa.

Kuir Akech: Empowering Youth through Study-friendly Spaces

Kuir Akech: Empowering Youth through Study-friendly Spaces

Kuir: Happy to be with you, Spiffy! I began by working on the Community Peace Initiative, which uses educational programs such as debates, workshops, radio programs, and writing competitions to bring about durable peace and stability in South Sudan. The Community Peace Initiative became my Rise Project too, part of a global initiative by Schmidt Futures. In 2021, my purpose expanded, and I started “Edupower Youth Foundation” and merged it with the Community Peace Initiative to serve my community at a broader scale. Its mission is to empower youth in education through the creation of study- and research-friendly spaces (like libraries) to promote shared learning, curiosity, and diversity among students and communities. Our initiatives include voluntary service, back-to-school programs, entrepreneurial leadership, and libraries.

Evan Huang: Improving Quality of Life for the Elderly and Disabled
Evan: Happy to be with you, Spiffy! A favorite adage of mine is, “You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone.” We take so much for granted and don’t appreciate the little things. What about those who cannot perform simple tasks like getting up, walking to the kitchen table, and getting something to eat or drink? In 2022, I participated in the Rise Challenge, a challenge to showcase brilliance. My project for this challenge was developing DrinkBot, a robot that can grab and deliver old cups for the elderly and disabled. The challenge I am addressing is the care for the elderly and disabled. Even after becoming a Rise Global Winner, I continued to develop and improve DrinkBot.
